Travel Guide or Intercultural trainer – maybe both?

LinkedIn Post

Last month I had the great fortune to spend my time back in Mexico and worked as a tourist guide again.
One or the other was confused and asked, „Annette, I thought you were doing something with intercultural training now?“

YES, that is correct too.

I worked part- and full-time as a tourist guide for many years – until the pandemic. Additionally, with our move to the US, I was forced to rethink. Then fulfilled a long-cherished wish and completed the certification as an IC trainer. A new (remote) profession that fits great with our Expat-Life.

Why I´m telling all this?

Some weeks ago, the opportunity came across to go back to Mexico and support Loseana Private Tours – Mexiko during the high season as a tour guide. The desire was immediately huge – BUT I hesitated a lot

My thought: Now I'm working as an Intercultral trainer, and I can't do something else again.

Thanks to my great husband, who always supports me and just put the comment: „Why do you have to decide? You can do both!“ He is right; why do we have to choose and pursue only one profession

The German in me

Well, that’s the German in me, and the strict pursuit of ONE career path is a very German way of thinking.
Looking at my CV, you will see that I have always taken new paths and accepted different challenges. Not always good for me – because the perfect German CV has to be straight. At least from my experience with HR and the German job market. (Thanks, it changes a bit with the new generations)

Mexico and the States are more flexible and encouraging to go new ways and take new opportunities. I like that, and I may continue with both paths.

Working as a tourist guide AND Intercultural Trainer fulfills me a lot.
Actually, both jobs have in common; they bring culture close to the people and create emotions!

What do you think about it; do you have to choose always one profession? And how is it seen in your culture?
